Dependability Evaluations of Redundant Hard Disks Based on Markov Processes Using Industrial CAD Tool
Mihaela Radu
Abstract
As the performance of computer systems increased dramatically over the last decades, the need to store huge amount of data increased also. The amount of digital information produced is greater and greater, and preserving digital information over several decades is a reasonable expectation in today’s world. A generally accepted solution is Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID), a storage technology that combines multiple disk drive components into a logical unit. In this paper an alternative efficient method for estimating the dependability parameters of RAID systems using an industrial grade CAD tool is presented.  Using Markov processes and the concept of k-out-of-n redundant systems, the presented methods and associated tool allow accurate, rapid and flexible estimations of RAID dependability parameters. The analyses are performed using CARE (Computer Aided Reliability Engineering), an industrial grade CAD tool.  The results of the estimations matched expected results.
