Effect of Enlargement and Reduction Parameters for Identification of Source Media: Studies on Fax Documents
Komal Saini , Mansi Gupta
Abstract
Facsimile machine is a device capable of scanning a document and converting the image to digital data which could be sent over national and international telephone systems. The receiving fax demodulates the signal and restores the image to its original form. Many documents such as business contracts, purchase agreements, invoices and purchase orders are send as fax from one place to another. These documents are sometimes questioned for its authenticity & genuineness and submitted to private & government laboratories for examination. The current study has been done to determine whether it’s possible to study the received fax documents and determine which print source (laser or inkjet) they were sent from. Total eighty seven fax machines were used to conduct this study, among which two were chosen to send original documents and eighty five machines received the fax documents. The faxed documents received from various selected machines were analyzed as compared to the original source printed documents. Results revealed that the type of printing of the source document affected the dimensional changes in the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the text.
