Role of Positive Youth Development in Happiness and Flourishing
Abstract
Positive youth development (PYD), a strength-based approach to youth development, considers youth’s assets and attributes (five Cs) as resources that promote positive adaptation thereby enhancing their happiness and helping them to flourish. The present research explores the relationship of the five C’s of PYD with flourishing and happiness among youth. The data were analyzed using correlation and regression analysis. The results of the correlation analysis revealed significant positive associations of the 5 Cs of positive youth development with flourishing and happiness. Further, the results of regression analysis showed significant contributions of the five C’s of PYD in predicting happiness and flourishing among youth. The stepwise regression revealed confidence, connection and competence as significant predictors of youth’s happiness. Connection, character and competence were found to be significant indicators of youth’s flourishing These findings highlight the need and importance of designing, developing and implementing programs focusing on positive youth development which in turn would promote happiness and help the youth to flourish.
