Trends of Internal Migration in India: A Macro level Scenario, 2011
Abstract
Migration is a geographical phenomenon that seems to be a human necessity in every age. Since, man has a tendency to leave the areas in which life is difficult, he migrates to the areas where life may be easy and better. The present research paper examines some of the salient features of internal migration in the country at the aggregate level. The trends of internal migration have been analysed in terms of lifetime as well as inter-censal migrants. In addition, a discussion on migrants by streams and by distance categories has also been presented.
Census of India is the main source of information on migration. Till 1961, census adopted the ‘place of birth’ criterion for defining migration. An additional question on ‘place of last residence’ was introduced at the time of 1971 census to make the data on migration more comprehensive and accountable.
